Director Message

KFAS was established with the aim of driving progress in all areas of science and technology while also inspiring a culture of progress and innovation, and we remain as committed to delivering on the vision of the late Emir, His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, as we were when he established the Foundation back in 1976. The Amir saw that, working with contributions from the private sector, KFAS could play a leading role in driving forward progress and making Kuwait a real leader in science and technology.

This website shall be the window through which we share with you information on all our work past, present and future. 2015 marks the year KFAS delivered on our 2012 promise to stakeholders, presented in the form of a five-year strategic plan. Most notably, we celebrated the completion of the final stage of our "Listen, plan, implement, and evaluate" cycle. Bringing together input from all our directors and program managers, obtained through self-assessments and interviews with stakeholders’ representatives –both internal and external- and conducted by an independent international panel of specialists, we transparently addressed several key questions, namely: Are we doing the right thing? Are we doing it well?’ Do we make a difference? And what should we do next?

KFAS is focused on investing in priority areas for Kuwait. 2015 saw the implementation of two major new demonstration projects in the field of renewable energy technology. With funding of KD2 million, these will help the state move towards a more sustainable energy future.  Our successful engagement with private sector companies is equally celebrated at KFAS. Over half of the 'Innovation Challenge -2015' projects presented to management at the ten participating companies, have now either been approved for implementation or are currently being positively considered for approval.

We also recently celebrated the launch of two major new initiatives in 2015. The Al Sumait prize for African development initiatives in the fields of health, food security and education is a valuable new addition to our annual awards scheme. An initiative announced by HH the Amir of The State of Kuwait provides an annual prize of US$1 million, with the Board of Trustees tasked with recognizing and rewarding the worthy recipients including Mr. Bill Gates of the Gates Foundation. The second initiative reflects our determination to recognize academic excellence by supporting Kuwaiti graduates through internships and research opportunities. We have funded six high achieving graduates in our first year and we have also been enriching the program by adopting a Professional Development initiative, giving the brightest Kuwaiti graduates the opportunity to gain experience at US companies under the supervision of the National United States and Arab Chamber of Commerce (NUSACC), and in collaboration with Kuwait Embassy in Washington DC.

On this website, you can follow the work KFAS supports, both in Kuwait and in the wider Gulf Region. You can also find information on our many pioneering initiatives, including collaborations with the private sector, training and personal development programs and news from our education projects. The site also features information on the prestigious prizes offered by KFAS and designed to celebrate Kuwaiti and Arab scientists and their pioneering achievements, both at home and abroad. Here you can find out how these prizes are awarded and learn how to apply to be considered for an award.
